Part 9 - Darkening the Sky

This article continues the editing of a picture of 47703 at Bristol Parkway.

One of the common areas for improving a landscape picture is darkening the sky. We show a technique for doing this using Photoshop Adjustment Layers and masks. Using masks in Photoshop Elements can be awkward due to the limited functionality available but some techniques are shown to get the best out of the product.

When editing masks you need to choose the right type of brush, particularly whether “soft” or “hard”. Below are two screenshots showing how to choose brushes in full Photoshop and Elements.
