The advent of digital photography may be seen by some as a ‘nail in the coffin’ for black & white but the reality is that digital cameras and computer processing make the creation of black & white images easier than with film. The article in the printed magazine explains how to create high quality black & white images. The graphics are shown here so that readers can compare the different images on a PC display.

Below is a comparison of a couple of different black & white conversion methods from a colour digital image with an image from genuine black & white film. The differences between them are surprisingly small, demonstrating that the digital method is capable of delivering excellent results.
